Our slogan at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary - APSS in Kleinbaai, Gansbaai, is “Every Bird Counts.” We shared our concerns and the conservation work we do for the critically endangered African Penguins with Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, and his family during the winter school holidays.
James and his family also joined the Marine Dynamics team in releasing four young African Penguins close to their home colony on Dyer Island on Friday, 28 June.
The Marine Dynamics/Dyer Island Conservation Trust seabird ranger on Dyer Island alerted the team at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary about four underweight penguin chicks on the island. Our bird ranger plays a very important role on Dyer Island by monitoring each penguin nest and alerting the team to any sick or injured penguins or seabirds. These birds are immediately transported to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, where our veterinarian, Dr. Annamarie Roberts, and her APSS team treat them until they are fit and strong enough to return to their home colony on Dyer Island.
After a lot of tender love, care, and good food, they were ready for their first swim in the ocean-a moment to be treasured.
Alderman James Vos had the honour of wishing the little fellows well and assisting in placing them back into the ocean. He also reiterated the importance of supporting eco-tourism organizations with conservation at the core and soul of the enterprise.
